What are the pros of the Ohme Home Pro EV charger?

1. Advanced EV tariff integration

One of the biggest unique selling points of the Ohme Home Pro, and honestly, the Ohmes in general, is its advanced EV tariff integration. The long list of compatible EV tariffs is nearly endless, with the Ohme Home Pro being directly compatible with almost all EV tariffs on the market, including:

• Intelligent Octopus Go
• E.ON Next
• E.ON Next Drive
• British Gas EV tariff

Not a lot of EV chargers on the market can say the same.

2. Three ways to manage your home EV charging

Most electric car chargers offer only app management via your smartphone to control your home charging. But not the Ohme Home Pro EV charger.

The Home Pro goes above and beyond, with three different charging management modes at your fingertips:

1. Manage your charging via the clean Ohme Home Pro app
2. Stop and start charging sessions with the buttons on the front of the charger
3. Use the futuristic, interactive LCD screen for quick, user-friendly charging control. Perfect for those days when you find yourself running late, or if you’ve left your phone on the kitchen table.

3. Quirky and compact design

In a boxy, techy design reminiscent of the early-days Nintendo DS, the Home Pro offers a unique yet alluring look.

While not the smallest or slimmest on the market, the Home Pro comes in a modest size at 170 mm (H) x 200mm (W) x 100mm (D), and weighs 4kg. So the Home Pro is definitely small in stature compared to other chargers. Ideal for those who prefer the neat and discreet approach.

That said, the Ohme Home Pro’s hardware is polarising, like marmite; you either like it or you don’t. While small, some EV drivers find that the Ohme Home Pro is too bulky.

4. Solar compatibility 

In the Home Pro’s infancy, solar home EV charging wasn’t an option. In 2026, though? Solar software is now baked in, so EV owners can now charge their car with free, surplus solar energy with the Ohme Home Pro.

But there is a caveat for some Ohme owners: your Ohme must be installed after January 2023 to access solar compatibility; you must own a solar PV system (solar panels); you must use the 2.20.2 version of the Ohme app, and you need to have a CT clamp fitted.

5. Home power balancing as standard

Full protection for your EV, your home and you is all made possible with the Ohme Home Pro’s home power balancing feature. So, sit back and relax as your electric car charges safely.

How does it work, you ask? Imagine you’re watching TV, your kettle is boiling, your washing machine is mid-cycle, your dishwasher is on, and your electric car is charging too. That’s a considerable amount of electricity in use.

But not to worry. If it veers on being too much, your Home Pro will automatically adjust your Ohme’s power to ensure you never blow your main fuse.

Usually, load balancing is an additional extra, but Ohme includes this handy safety extra as standard.

6. Safe, secure EV charging sessions with lock functionality 

Going on holiday? Visiting a friend? Travelling for work? Never fret about your EV charger being left on its own, susceptible to lurking strangers. The lock functionality is here.

Add another layer of security by approving each charging session with the Ohme Home Pro’s special feature. In the rare, rare case that someone pulls up and plugs in, you can deny the charging session request via your phone. Alternatively, or in addition, lock the charger buttons on the front of your Home Pro.

What are the cons of the Ohme Home Pro EV charger?

1. Not compatible with OVO Charge Anytime

Nothing lasts forever. And unfortunately, the same can be said for the Home Pro and OVO Charge Anytime EV tariff partnership.

Previously, Ohme owners on the OVO Charge Anytime tariff could charge for cheaper and greener. Sadly, this privilege was revoked on 15 July 2025.

For those who favour the OVO Charge Anytime EV tariff, the Ohme Home Pro could no longer be the right choice for you. That is, unless you have an EV that is directly compatible with OVO Charge Anytime.

Remember that the Ohme Home Pro is still compatible with Intelligent Octopus Go, which offers the same charging cost of 8p per kWh. So all is not lost.

2. Ohme API is not compatible with all electric cars

Specific electric vehicles gain exclusive access to Ohme’s intelligent API, allowing your Ohme access to your electric car’s information and offering special additional features.

One, for example, is that your car can see your battery’s state of charge. And two, you’ll be able to set your electric car to charge by X amount of charge by a certain amount of time. Ideal for those who want their EV charged on time, especially for a commute to work or a long journey ahead.

Unfortunately, not all electric vehicles are compatible with the Ohme Home Pro’s API. Verify that your electric car is compatible if you are desperate for these additional features.

• Mini
• Nissan
• Renault
• Tesla

3. SIM card is only free for up to 3 years

Currently, Ohme only offers free SIM card usage for up to 3 years. After this, you may be subject to additional fees.

In contrast, other electric car chargers offer free lifetime 3G/4G SIMs – like the Easee One.

This isn’t a deal-breaker, but it is something to be aware of if you value savings and don’t want any additional ongoing costs.

4. No Wi-Fi connectivity

The Ohme Home Pro uses 4G mobile connectivity to connect your EV, the app and the charger. For those living in quaint villages nestled miles from the city with limited mobile signal, or in blackspot areas in town, the Ohme Home Pro may not be for you.

Check your mobile data connection where you’d like your Ohme. Think about the garage or on your drive. How many signal bars do you see on your phone? If you see one or none, you might want to opt for an EV charger with Wi-Fi connectivity; otherwise, you may experience limited functionality with your Ohme or spotty savings from frequent connecting and disconnecting.

Ohme Home Pro Review: Is the Ohme Home Pro any good?

Overall, in our opinion, the Ohme Home Pro is a great all-rounder home EV charger, especially for those who favour advanced tech. In fact, the advanced EV tariff integration is a surefire way to drastically cut home EV charging costs. So much so, other electric car chargers are struggling to meet the same level of sophistication when it comes to EV tariff integration, especially the extensive library of compatible EV tariffs.

However, the Ohme Home Pro might not be for everyone. If you’re on the OVO Charge Anytime tariff, the Home Pro isn’t directly compatible, which means you would have to switch to another EV tariff if you want to maximise your savings at home.

What’s more, if you live in an area where mobile connection is spotty, you might sporadically lose access to the Home Pro’s smart charging features. Our suggestion for this scenario is to choose a home EV charger with Wi-Fi connectivity instead to guarantee cheaper, reliable home charging sessions.

What’s the difference between the Ohme ePod and Home Pro?

Simply put, the main difference between the Ohme ePod and the Ohme Home Pro is the design. The Ohme ePod is a tethered home charger, where the charging cable is permanently attached. In comparison, the Ohme Home Pro is an untethered charger, where you have to plug and unplug the charging cable each charging session.

On top of this, the Ohme Home Pro also has an LCD screen to manage home electric vehicle charging. Unfortunately, the Ohme ePod does not have this feature, and the lack of a screen creates a different look and shape to the charger.

While they look different aesthetically, the premium smart features remain the same. Both allow you to track home charging costs, take advantage of the best EV energy tariffs on the market (Intelligent Octopus Go, for example), and charge with cheaper off-peak electricity.

Likewise, the Ohme ePod and Home Pro are equally user-friendly. They both have buttons on the front of the charger, and also use a 3G/4G signal to connect your electric car, the Ohme app on mobile, and the Ohme charger to easily manage charging sessions. Each charger can top up your electric car battery up to 7.4kW, too.

Both chargers also have:

• Earth rods (built-in earthing protection)
• Sim cards for 3G/4G connection
• Load balancing
• The capability for solar charging

Ohme Home Pro or ePod, which is better?

In short, the Ohme ePod and Home Pro are extremely similar. Both Ohme chargers are identical in smart charging functionality and technology, with the only differences between the chargers being style and size. With this in mind, when it comes to the Ohme ePod vs Ohme Home Pro, one is not better than the other – it is subjective.

But, if you’re looking for the cheaper of the two, the Ohme ePod just pips it – but only by £20-£30.

Additionally, if you want a home charger that works with Type 1 and Type 2 electric cars, the Ohme ePod is for you. In fact, the Ohme Home Pro only comes in a Type 2 form. So, those with a Type 1 electric car wouldn’t be able to use the Home Pro.
