Firstly, who is E.ON?
Realistically, if you’re here, you probably know who E.ON are. But for those who don’t, E.ON is a leading player in the energy market, known for powering Europe with a sustainable edge.
Does E.ON offer an EV Tariff in the UK?
Absolutely. Like other major energy suppliers, E.ON has jumped into the electric car game with its two EV tariffs: Next Drive and Next Drive Smart, crafted specifically to give electric vehicle drivers a charging edge with lower prices and more renewable energy.
So, what is the E.ON Next Drive Smart EV Tariff?
In short, the E.ON Next Drive Smart EV tariff offers a fixed off-peak charging rate of just 8p per kilowatt-hour during the hours of 12 am to 6 am. Impressively, this is the longest cheaper charging window from all the energy suppliers in the UK. Fully charge your EV for a fraction of the E.ON standard electricity price during these off-peak times.
On top of this, all electricity generated during this window is entirely renewable from local Yorkshire wind farms. A win for you, your wallet and the earth.

What’s the E.ON Next Drive EV tariff?
The Next Drive EV tariff offers 9p per kWh of electricity during the off-peak window of 12 am and 6 am.

What do you need for E.ON’s Next Drive tariffs?
Before you can take advantage of an E.ON EV charging tariff, a compatible charging ecosystem needs to be in place at home. This includes:
- A smart meter that sends updates every to E.ON every 30 minutes (Don’t worry if you don’t have one, E.ON offers a free smart meter installation)
- A smart EV charging point installed at home
- An electric car (any make or model words; it doesn’t have to be a specific E.ON vehicle)
- You’ll need to be an E.ON Next customer for your electricity supply (You can get a quote on the E.ON website)
Is there a specific charger I need for the E.ON car charging tariff?
Good news: unlike other energy companies that have their own chargers or partnerships with other EV charging manufacturers, you don’t need a specific charger. While there are E.ON EV chargers available, you don’t need a specific E.ON next EV charger to access these exciting low charging rates.
So, any smart home chargers that have tariff integration can access the E.ON Drive tariff. For example, the smart and feature-rich VCHRGD Seven Pro or the intelligent Ohme Home Pro.
Should I know anything else about the E.ON EV Tariff?
Besides the cheaper home charging, the E.ON energy EV tariff comes with a few other perks that are hard to ignore:
- No exit fees: You’re free to switch tariffs or energy providers without any penalties.
- Fixed energy prices for a full year: Lock in your rates and charge without worrying about fluctuating prices.
Are there always cheaper rates with the E.ON Next Drive EV Tariff?
Unfortunately not. While the off-peak charging window (12 am–7 am) offers 8p or 9p rates (depending on which Next Drive tariff you choose), if you need to charge during on-peak hours, you’ll be subject to standard electricity prices (the national average is 24.67p per kilowatt-hour). But this will vary by region and is subject to change.
With this in mind, it’s smart to plan your charging schedule to take full advantage of the low rates. And, remember, if you find yourself needing to power up during the day, these savings won’t apply outside those off-peak hours. However, you will still have cheaper charging than using public charging points.
Is the E.ON Next Drive EV Tariff worth it?
Without a doubt, E.ON Next’s Drive or Next Drive Smart EV tariffs are powerful options for EV owners looking to lower their home electric car charging costs. Across the board, both E.ON Next Drive EV tariffs are tied with other popular electric vehicle charging tariffs on the market, offering one of the lowest off-peak rates. Let’s take a look:
- Intelligent Octopus Go at 8p per kWh during off-peak hours
- Good Energy EV tariff at 8.5p per kWh
- So Energy EV tariff at 8.8p per kWh
- British Gas EV tariff at 9p per kWh
If you’re with E.ON for your electricity, it’s definitely an EV tariff worth considering for a quick, easy way to charge for cheaper and greener. That said, if you’re on the hunt for the cheapest EV tariff, your head may be turned elsewhere. Take a look at EDF’s Go Electric tariff, offering a shockingly low electricity rate of 6.99p per kWh for seven hours, seven days a week.
