Who is ScottishPower?

ScottishPower is a common household name in the energy market, known as one of the ‘big six’ energy providers in the UK.

Does ScottishPower have an EV tariff?

Yes, ScottishPower has two EV tariffs, in fact. Just like other energy providers, ScottishPower hopped on the bandwagon, introducing its own tariffs specifically targeted at electric vehicle owners:

  1. EV Saver: Charge your electric car for just 8.5p per kWh between the hours of 12 am and 5 am with 100% green electricity with the ScottishPower EV tariff. This is a fixed EV tariff.
  2. EV Optimise: Charge your EV for 8p per kWh at any time of day by adding on this tariff to a preexisting Scottish Power EV Saver tariff. Simply set your ready time in the app, and Scottish Power will find the cheapest and greenest rates for you. This is a flexible EV tariff.

ScottishPower EV Saver VS EV Optimise: A side-by-side comparison

EV Saver

EV Optimise

Rate 8.5p per kWh 8p per kWh
Discounted charging hours 12 am – 5 am

Fixed window

Anytime except peak hours of 4 pm – 8 pm
Cost on a full charge (60 kWh battery) £5.10 £4.80
Annual EV electricity cost (10,000 miles a year) £243 £229
Annual savings VS standard variable £503 a year £517 a year
Structure Fixed 12-month EV tariff with its only special off-peak rate of 8.5p per kWh and peak rate of 31.44p per kWh. Add this to your existing EV Saver tariff to access even cheaper electricity rates. No separate peak rate.

What are the peak hour charging rates?

Outside of the discounted 12 am to 5 am window for the Scottish Power EV Saver tariff, you’ll have to pay the day rate.

Unfortunately, as this varies depending on your tariff and your location, we can’t give you an exact number. However, currently, Scottish Power’s day rate is averaging around 31.44p per kWh.

What makes ScottishPower’s EV tariffs special?

  1. Lower electricity prices: Save considerably on home EV charging costs compared to the standard variable ScottishPower tariff. Not only that, but by charging at the 8p or 8.5p per kWh rate, you can save hundreds when compared against the current electricity rate – 26.11p per kWh, according to Ofgem.
  2. Environmentally friendly electricity: ScottishPower offers 100% green electricity. Reduce your carbon footprint by charging your electric car when demand is low and renewable energy is rife in the grid.

What do you need for the ScottishPower EV Saver Tariff?

  • Be a ScottishPower customer on the standard variable tariff (you can get a quote online)
  • A single-rate smart meter that can send half-hourly readings and pay monthly by Direct Debit (you can get a smart meter installation through the website)
  • A home EV charger installed on your property
  • Own an electric car (any electric vehicle will do)
  • Have a smartphone so you can control your home charging through the ScottishPower app.

Do you need a specific EV charger for a Scottish Power EV tariff?

Fortunately, for those who’ve already invested in an EV charging point at home, you don’t need a specific ScottishPower EV charger to take advantage of the tariff, unlike other tariffs on the market.

Of course, ScottishPower does offer EV home chargers.

But, as long as you meet the other requirements for the tariff, you’re set to charge for cheaper and greener without buying directly through ScottishPower.

That means some of the best home EV chargers on the market, such as the Ohme Home Pro and Indra Smart LUX, are compatible with the Scottish Power EV Tariff.

Who is the ScottishPower EV Saver tariff best for?

Best for:

  • Existing ScottishPower customers looking for a quick way to save on EV charging costs
  • EV owners who typically charge overnight

Might not be the best fit for:

  • Electric car owners wanting the cheapest EV tariff on the market
  • Households that aren’t already with ScottishPower

Who is the ScottishPower EV Optimise tariff best for?

Best for:

  • Existing Scottish Power customers who can simply add on the tariff
  • Drivers who require the ability to charge at any time of day, i.e. those who work night shifts
  • EV drivers wanting to save on their EV charging

Might not be the best fit for:

  • EV households that aren’t already with Scottish Power for their electricity
  • EV drivers wanting the cheapest EV tariff rate available on the market

The decision: Is a ScottishPower EV tariff worth it?

If you’re committed to maximising your home EV charging savings, either ScottishPower EV tariff would be an ideal choice when picking an EV tariff.

ScottishPower’s EV saver tariff offers cheaper electricity overnight, which can be a great advantage over a standard tariff with flat or minimal, not to mention high, price variations. And when paired with smart charging habits, such as charge scheduling, it can lead to huge savings.

In our opinion, if you’re already with ScottishPower for your electricity, have an EV, and own, or are in the market for, an EV home charger, then yes, the EV Saver tariff is entirely worth it. Cost savings are a reward with very little inconvenience to your life. Simply swap to the tariff through your online account.

Compare the ScottishPower EV Saver tariff rate of 8.5p per kWh with other EV tariffs on the market, and you’ll see there’s very little difference (rates correct at the time of writing):
