Scottish Power EV Tariff Review: Is it Worth your Energy?
Scottish Power EV Tariff Review: Is it Worth your Energy?
The advantageous perks of electric cars are becoming renowned in the UK as we take our place as Europe’s second-biggest EV market.
But once you’ve made that switch, there’s something new to consider: how to efficiently—and affordably— charge your electric car.
That’s where EV tariffs come in. But which is the ideal fit for you?
Next on our electric car charging tariff review series is ScottishPower’s EV Saver Tariff.
Today, we look behind the scenes at the Scottish Power EV charging tariff – pros, cons, and whether it’s worth your time.
Who is ScottishPower?
ScottishPower is a common household name in the energy market, known as one of the ‘big six’ energy providers in the UK.
Does Scottish Power have an EV tariff?
Just like other energy providers, ScottishPower has introduced their own tariff specifically targeted at electric vehicle owners. It’s name? The EV Saver Tariff from ScottishPower.
Cheaply charge your electric car for just 7.2p per kW between the hours of 12 am and 5 am with 100% green electricity with the ScottishPower EV tariff. Sleep and save. Simple.
What are the rates outside of these hours?
Outside of the midnight to 5am window, you’ll have to pay your ScottishPower EV tariff day rate. Unfortunately, as this varies depending on your tariff and your location, we can’t give you an exact number.
What makes the Scottish Power EV Tariff special?
- Lower electricity prices: Save considerably on home EV charging costs compared to the standard variable ScottishPower tariff.
- Environmentally friendly electricity: ScottishPower offers 100% green electricity. Reduce your carbon footprint by charging your electric car when demand is low and renewable energy is rife in the grid.
What do you need for the Scottish Power EV Saver Tariff?
- Be a ScottishPower customer on the standard variable tariff (you can get a quote online)
- A single-rate smart meter that can send half-hourly readings and pay monthly by Direct Debit (you can get a smart meter installation through the website)
- A home EV charger installed on your property
- Own an electric car (any electric vehicle will do)
- Have a smart phone so you can control your home charging through the ScottishPower app.
Do you need a specific ScottishPower EV Charger for the tariff?
Fortunately, for those who’ve already invested in an EV charging point at home, you don’t need a specific Scottish Power EV charger to take advantage of the tariff, unlike other tariffs on the market.
Of course, Scottish Power does offer EV home chargers.
But, as long as you meet the other requirements for the tariff, you’re set to charge for cheaper and greener without buying directly through Scottish Power.
That means popular EV home chargers such as the Ohme Home Pro and Easee One are compatible with the Scottish Power EV Tariff.
The decision: Is the ScottishPower EV Saver Tariff worth it for electric vehicle owners?
If you’re committed to maximising your home EV charging costs, the Scottish Power EV Tariff could be a solid choice when picking an EV tariff. Scottish Power’s EV saver Tariff offers cheaper electricity overnight, which can be a great advantage over a standard tariff with flat or minimal – not the mention high – variations in price. And when paired with smart charging habits, such as charge scheduling, it can lead to noticeable savings.
In our opinion, if you’re already with ScottishPower for your electricity, have an EV, and own, or, are in the market for an EV home charger, then yes the EV Saver Tariff is entirely worth it. Cost savings are a reward with very little inconvenience to your life. Simply swap to the tariff through your online account.
However, should you move from one energy provider to another solely for this tariff?
Ultimately, it depends.
If you’re savvy and frugal, and are planning to swap energy provides regardless, then perhaps you should go for a tariff with the cheapest electric car charging rate. Certain EV tariffs, such as the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff offer rates of 7p per kilowatt hour, just slightly less than the ScottishPower. Save the most money possible.
Be aware that the requirements may be different, though. Each EV tariff has it’s own rules and requirements. You may want to swap but find that you don’t have a compatible electric car or the right home EV charger for certain tariffs. British Gas, E.ON and EDF all do esteemed EV tariffs.
Summary:
- The EV saver tariff by Scottish Power is a stellar tariff those already with ScottishPower and have an electric car at home.
- The Scottish Power EV tariff times are between midnight and 5am.
- The Scottish Power EV tariff rates are 7.2p during the relevant hours.
