Good Energy EV Tariff Guide & Review

Good Energy EV Tariff Guide and Review

Energy providers are gearing up for the electric revolution, introducing new tariffs to help EV owners charge for less from the comfort of their own homes. Over the years, almost all of the UK’s leading electricity suppliers have rolled out new EV tariffs. Octopus, British Gas, EDF – to name only a handful.

But what about the new tariff on the electric vehicle charging scene? The Good Energy EV tariff.

Small yet mighty, Good Energy prides itself on providing cheaper and greener energy for UK residents, offering electricity, solar panels, heat pumps and more. You can even save with their solar export tariff.

But how much exactly can you charge for with the Good Energy EV tariff? Is it worth switching to? What do you need to take advantage of the Good Energy tariffs?

In this article, we provide everything you need to know about the Good Energy electric vehicle tariff.

What is the Good Energy EV tariff?

In short, the Good Energy EV tariff is designed exclusively for electric car owners, offering fixed rates for on and off-peak hours. The advantage? Between the off-peak hours of 12 am and 5 am, you’ll pay as little as 6.75p per kWh to charge your electric car. Get easy access to five hours of low-cost energy every night, seven days a week.

Better yet, all electricity used to charge your car is 100% renewable electricity sourced from 2,500 independent British generators. That’s not to mention how Good Energy is Britain’s only B Corp energy supplier.

Good for the planet. Good for your bank account. Good Energy.

What do you need for the Good Energy EV tariff?

Thinking about switching to the Good Energy EV tariff? Here’s what you’ll need to join and start charging and saving:

  1. Be a Good Energy customer – The EV tariff is available exclusively to Good Energy customers. If you’re not with them for your electricity, it’s easy to make the switch online and start enjoying 100% renewable energy at home. Typically, it takes about two days to join Good Energy. Check for early exit fees from your current provider, though.
  2. Sign up for the EV Tariff – Once your home energy is with Good Energy, you can register for the EV tariff online to unlock the special rates. Be aware that this process can take up to two weeks to complete fully.
  3. Own an electric car – The key ingredient—your EV. Without an electric car, you won’t be able to take advantage of the tariff, nor would there be any point. Whether you have already made the switch to electric or are planning to get one soon, this tariff is built to help you charge affordably and environmentally friendly at home. Don’t forget the benefits of electric cars if you’re still trying to decide.
  4. A smart meter with half-hourly readings – To get access to the best off-peak rates, you’ll need a smart meter capable of sending half-hourly meter readings. Don’t have one yet? Your current provider or Good Energy can help.
  5. A smart home electric car charger – A smart charger is the key to optimising your home charging setup and being able to take charge with EV tariffs. Public charging points and three-pin plug chargers can’t offer this. In fact, home EV chargers have a number of benefits over these methods of charging.

Which EV chargers are compatible?

Across the Good Energy website, you’ll see the MyEnergi Zappi home charger plastered across their EV tariff page. So, it comes as no shock to say that, yes, the Zappi is, of course, compatible with the tariff.

But don’t fret if you already have a different home charger or if you have your eye on another (think the intelligent Ohme Home Pro or the solar-ready Indra Smart LUX). Across the board, the Good Energy tariff works with almost all home EV chargers – as long as they have tariff compatibility.

In our review, we help you decide whether the Zappi charger is right for you.

Do you need a specific electric car?

It’s good news—any battery electric car will work with the Good Energy smart EV Tariff.

What happens if you leave the Good Energy EV Tariff early?

Unfortunately, if you leave the Good Energy EV tariff and switch energy suppliers before the end of the fixed tariff period, you will be subject to a £75 exit fee.

Is it worth switching to the Good Energy EV tariff?

In a word, yes—the Good Energy EV tariff is without a doubt worth switching to. It’s one of the cheapest EV tariffs on the market at 6.75p per kWh during off-peak hours. Compare the EV tariff Good Energy with other contenders, and it’s clear to see its value:

This means, according to Good Energy, you can get a 5-hour charge for as little as £2.50. Don’t forget—you rarely need a full charge. In fact, it’s best not to for your EV battery health.

What’s more, right now, if you switch to the Good Energy EV tariff, you’ll get a free Zap-Map premium subscription for 12 months, too. Save money at home and save time on the road.

Plus, for complete peace of mind, Good Energy is currently rated five-star on Trustpilot with over 12,000 reviews. While Good Energy isn’t as large scale as other providers, the proof is in the pudding with their customer service.
