Introduction

Dermal Laboratories, an independent pharmaceutical company in the UK, has been formulating innovative skin care products for over 60 years. Their headquarters is in a beautiful, listed building surrounded by wooded grounds, with modern R&D and office facilities in two separate buildings on the same extensive site near Hitchin in Hertfordshire. They also operate a modern warehouse facility in Bedfordshire, and a production facility in Norfolk. As part of their future-proofing initiative and drive towards sustainability, they wished to provide electric vehicle charging points for visitors and staff across all their facilities.

“Dermal Laboratories is always looking for opportunities to be more sustainable and, as a family business, ways in which we can support employees in adopting new technology. With a growing number of staff and visitors using hybrid and electric vehicles, and government incentives available, it was the perfect time to prepare our sites for the wider adoption of this technology.”

Dermal Laboratories Faced the Challenge of Electrifying a Portfolio of Diverse Premises for The Future

The diverse range of buildings meant that Dermal Laboratories required bespoke solutions for each location.

Dealing with historic properties, such as the headquarters site, requires sensitivity and creativity, to have minimal impact to the site. We explored many options for cable runs to get sufficient power to the chosen location.

Our team surveyed and visited the site on multiple occasions to work with various departments within Dermal Laboratories to ensure all stakeholders were satisfied with the charging solution and that it met the requirements for each site.

“From experience, we know that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. It pays to understand each client’s unique challenges and requirements. Clients such as Dermal Laboratories appreciate the extra time and expertise it takes to design a bespoke charging solution that meets their needs now and in the future.”

Why did Dermal Laboratories choose We Power Your Car?

“From our initial conversations, it was clear that We Power Your Car understood the scope of the project and were willing to design schemes to suit our specific needs, were adaptable on scope, and competitive on pricing. Being hardware agnostic meant they gave us the best solution for us. Ultimately, as we are a family business, their business ethics, track record and professionalism made them the right partner for Dermal Laboratories.”

Project 1: Dermal Laboratories Headquarters, Hitchin.

Initially, a front location was chosen for the listed building, but it was found to be costly and difficult to access. Instead, four Sevadis Maxichargers were mounted on a wall near a laboratory building for easier power access. Due to a pharmaceutical storage block, the cabling was installed below the chargers using a galvanized cable tray.

Project 2: Sales / Regulatory facility, Hitchin.

Four Sevadis Maxichargers were installed on two pedestals to electrify four parking spaces near to their Sales / Regulatory building. A dedicated EV Distribution Board was installed, and existing ducting, which was identified at the survey stage, was used to avoid costly excavation and surface reinstatement.

Project 3: Warehouse facility, Kempston

Two Sevadis Maxichargers were installed on a single pedestal to electrify two visitor bays. A first-generation charger was replaced, and the existing ducting was reused and extended for better accessibility, especially for disabled users. A dedicated EV Distribution Board with dynamic load management was also installed to prevent overloading.

Project 4: Warehouse facility, Kempston.

Four Sevadis Maxichargers were installed in pedestals in a staff car park at the rear of the property. Power was sourced from the main building to a dedicated EV Distribution Board, allowing for future expansion.

Project 5: Manufacturing facility, Great Yarmouth.

Six Sevadis Maxichargers were installed in pedestals in the car park at their newly constructed warehouse. Power was sourced from the main building to a dedicated EV Distribution Board, allowing for future expansion.

Charger management at all sites

The We Power Your Car back-office system manages the chargers, providing Dermal with data on energy consumption and usage. Additionally, the system simplifies access management by allowing charging sessions to be initiated with RFID cards or the We Power Your Car App.

The Results

“We’re really happy with the results. The installations at all the facilities, both inside and out, are neat and perfectly tailored to our needs now and in the coming years. The team was professional and responsive throughout the process and took steps to minimise disruption to our operations.”
