What is a tethered EV charger?
In short, a tethered EV charger has the charging cable permanently attached to the unit. Save time by having it ready and waiting at your disposal, unlike socketed units, where you have to manually locate your cable, unwind and plug it in. As well as unplug and store at the end.
Tethered electric car chargers are usually wall-mounted, but can be installed on pedestals and stands if you wish. Although this is more for commercial installations.
All in all, tethered EV chargers are slightly more expensive than socketed, or untethered, but the difference is minimal.
What are the benefits of tethered electric car chargers?
- Easy, convenient EV charging: Never lose your charging cable. It’s always where you left it. Practicality at its finest.
- More secure: The charging cable is built in, making it harder for thieves to steal.
- Time saver: Don’t waste time searching for your charging cable. Stay connected, always, with a tethered EV charger. That means faster plugging in. Ideal in wet weather, when every second counts.

Tethered EV Charger FAQs
We answer the most common questions surrounding tethered charging points.
What is a tethered EV charger?
A tethered electric car charger has the charging cable permanently attached. Picture it like a petrol pump.
How long is the cable on a tethered EV charger?
The length of a tethered cable depends on the manufacturer.
Some, such as the Ohme Home Pro, offer options: 5 metres or 8 metres. Others, such as the Zappi Glo, only come with one version, a 6.5-meter cable.
On average, tethered cable lengths vary from 5m to 10m.
Take a look at where you would like your EV charger and how far away your electric car is to ensure you get a long enough cable.
Are tethered chargers better than socketed?
One is not better than the other: they both have their own pros and cons.
The best depends on you and your home charging set-up.
Can you change the cable on a tethered EV charger?
No, you can’t swap the charging cable on a tethered charger.
If you need a longer cable, you will need to invest in a new chargepoint.
Are tethered chargers Type 1 or Type 2?
Most tethered EV chargers in the UK come with a Type 2 connector, which is the most common connector type on electric cars.
If you have a Type 1 electric vehicle, we recommend getting an untethered charger.
How much are tethered electric car chargers?
On average, tethered EV chargers cost more than socketed. But not by much.
You’re looking at roughly £800-£1,300 for a tethered EV charger and installation.
