Workplace Charging Scheme Grant: Are You Eligible?

The Workplace Charging Scheme grant has been extended for one final year, with a new deadline of 31 March 2027. During this time, businesses, charities and public sector organisations can claim up to £20,000 at £500 per socket, towards the cost of 40 commercial EV chargers and installation for staff use – so long as they’re eligible.

Today, as OZEV-authorised, SIP-accredited EV charger installers, in our comprehensive guide to the Workplace Charging Scheme grant, we cover:

  • What it is
  • Why it’s here
  • What’s on offer
  • Eligibility criteria
  • How to claim

Key WCS takeaways:

  • The Workplace Charging Scheme grant offers 75% off the total cost of purchasing and installing workplace EV chargers, coming in specifically at £500 per EV charging socket, up to a maximum of 40 sockets per business across all sites. That’s £20,000 in total.
  • Before April 2026, the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant funding was £350, but the amount was increased by OZEV this year, and the original deadline was pushed back.
  • New deadline: 31 March 2027. This is the final year of the Workplace Charging Scheme grant.
  • The Workplace Charging Scheme is a voucher-based system. You apply on the online portal, and once approved, the voucher will be issued. You give your OZEV-authorised installer this voucher.
  • The scheme was created to help dramatically cut costs for businesses when it comes to investing in electric car charging infrastructure.

What is the Workplace Charging Scheme grant?

In short, the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant is an Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) funded government grant aimed at boosting EV charging infrastructure across UK workplaces to support the UK’s EV adoption.

Over 65,000 workplace EV chargers have been installed since 2016, with thousands more to be installed with the new injection of government funding.

How much is on offer with the Workplace Charging Scheme grant?

In 2026, £500 per socket is available with the Workplace Charging Scheme, up to 40 sockets across all sites, totalling a huge £20,000.

That’s 40 individual EV chargers, or 20 dual EV chargepoints, depending on your preferences.

Previously, the Workplace Charging Scheme covered £350 per socket, with a maximum grant amount of £14,000.

Is the Workplace Charging Scheme still available?

It’s good news: the Workplace Charging Scheme grant is still open for business. But not forever.

The WCS is only available for a final year, with it coming to an end on 31 March 2027. Make sure you’ve claimed and your installation is in process before this date. You won’t be able to claim it at the last minute.

Who can claim the Workplace Charging Scheme?

  • Small to medium-sized businesses (less than 250 employees)
  • Public sector organisations (including emergency services, NHS organisations, local authorities, universities, and government departments).
  • Small accommodation businesses (including B&Bs)
  • Charities

What if I work from home? Am I eligible?

While not everyone can claim the Workplace Charging Scheme if they are a remote worker, those who have their home listed as their place of business with Companies House are eligible for £500 off the cost of a home charger.

The caveats:

  • You must have off-street parking.
  • You have already taken advantage of other EV charger grants, such as the previous Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme.

Sadly, you can’t apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme if you are an employee working from home.

What is the full eligibility criteria for the Workplace Charging Scheme?

  • An OZEV-approved installer must install the charge point
  • The EV charger must be on the OZEV-approved manufacturer list for commercial use
  • Business must be in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland
  • Must own the property or have permission from the landlord/property manager
  • Dedicated off-street parking with adequate parking space (i.e. car park)
  • You must supply your Companies House number, VAT registration number or business rate bill.
  • Businesses need to have fewer than 250 employees.
  • 3kW is the minimum speed of the charging point, meaning three-pin plug chargers are not eligible
  • Demonstrate a need for EV charging infrastructure now or in the future
  • An OZEV authorised installer is needed to do an initial site survey

Who can use Workplace Charging Scheme installed charging points?

If you’re a business:

  • Only staff or fleets are allowed to use the WCS-installed charging points. Customers are specifically not allowed.
  • That said, you can let nearby residents use your EV charging points outside of office hours.

If you’re a public authority, small accommodation business (such as B&Bs), or a charity:

  • No restrictions are in place: customers, employees, guests and more can all use your EV chargers.
