GeniePoint Charging Stations: A Guide to GeniePoint Network

Geniepoint Charging Stations: A Guide to Geniepoint Network

The UK public charging network is expanding. Now, with over 75,000 EV charging points ready and available for electric car owners, it’s clear that the electric revolution is not only here—it’s thriving.

Yet, growing infrastructure means new names and faces in charging providers. That’s where we come in.

Throughout our series, we are decoding each and every public charging network from the biggest and best to the fresh-faced newbies. So you know exactly where you stand—and how to charge.

Today, we cover GeniePoint. Locations, speeds, costs and more are included in our guide.

Who and what is the GeniePoint Network?

Owned and operated by French company Equans, previously known as Engie, the GeniePoint Network is one of the largest and first public EV charging networks in the UK. Launched in 2010, over 500 charging stations spread far and wide in ‘local’ locations, providing easy and accessible places to stop and charge.

What’s more, Octopus Energy powers every charge point on the GeniePoint network with 100% renewable electricity. So, EV drivers can reduce their carbon footprint with every electric mile.

What do the charging stations look like?

Tall and broad, the wide-set rectangular GeniePoint charging stations look similar to a petrol pump, without the fumes. Coated in their glossy signature blue or grey colour, they stand out against all backgrounds.

What charging speeds are available?

Currently, a number of electric car charging rates are available:

  • AC Fast chargers – 7-22kW
  • DC Rapid charging points – 50kW

Plus, coming soon, cutting-edge ultra-rapid chargers, or what they call superchargers, will offer charging speeds of up to 100kW. With ultra rapid charging, EV owners can charge their electric cars to 80% in as little as 20-45 minutes. That’s quick charging sessions.

Remember, you can only charge your electric car at this speed if your EV has the battery capacity. Some onboard chargers can’t handle certain high rates.

Where can I find GeniePoint EV charging stations?

From tightly-packed, bustling cities to rolling green countryside, GeniePoint has handily dotted charging stations all over the UK. Except, sadly, in Northern Ireland.

If you’re out and about, revving specifically for GeniePoint charging locations, public car parks, supermarkets, fuel forecourts and major roads, are a great start.

Or, if you’ve packed your reusable bags in the boot, primed and ready for the weekly shop, choose Morrisons. Over 250 Morrison stores have GeniePoint charging stations ready and available for their customers as their selected charging partners. So you can shop and charge till you drop.

What’s more, GeniePoint partnered with the Premier Inn hotel chain in 2021, too.

That said, if you’re looking for your nearest GeniePoint charging station and want to see it at lightning speed, use their online tool. Popular EV charging map apps, such as Zap-Map or Electroverse, can instantly help you find chargers, too.

Is GeniePoint charging free? How much does it cost?

Just like with other mainstream electric vehicle charging networks, GeniePoint charging stations aren’t free. That said, the cost of GeniePoint changes depending on where and for how long you charge.

Here are the GeniePoint costs:

Since it’s free to register on your smartphone, we’d recommend doing so. The five minutes it takes to complete the form is worth the discount you get in the future. Download the app from Google Play or Apple Store. And, you can get £5 credit every time you charge five times in a month.

For overnighters, it will cost you £10 after 90 minutes and £10 for every 90-minute stay after this.

Similarly to other public charging networks, when you first use a GeniePoint charger, you will incur a pre-authorisation amount of £35.

Don’t panic, though. GeniePoint will only charge you for the amount of kW you use, not the £35, and will release it after confirming you have sufficient funds.
