Asda Electric Car Charging Points: Your Handy Guide

Supermarkets are in a prime position to house electric vehicle charging facilities, offering maximised convenience for shoppers. In fact, charging while you shop is one of the most convenient ways to charge your electric car – firmly in third place behind charging at work, while you work, and then the most convenient – charging at home with a smart charger.

But what about Asda and its EV charging facilities? Does Asda have electric charging points? Are Asda charging points free?

In this guide, we answer everything to do with Asda charging points, from prices to locations, all the way to payment methods.

Does Asda have EV charging facilities?

In short, you can find EV charging stations at Asda. Although, the number is significantly less than supermarkets that have invested heavily – and continue to invest – in supporting the UK’s switch to electric.

Sainsbury’s has their ultra-rapid charging network – Smart Charge – as well as supplementary charging points from other manufacturers at different charging speeds across their stores. Another supermarket hero, Tesco, has an ever-growing variety of chargers across their stores, too – totalling over 600 charging points. Following close behind is Aldi, who frequently provides new charging infrastructure to their customers.

Asda, though, has pulled the plug on investing in EV charging infrastructure, significantly reducing the number of Asda charging points available in the UK. According to the Telegraph, there are only 46 Asda charging points left in the UK, down from the original 165 in 2023. Some have speculated that the reason behind the decision was because their partnership with BP Pulse came to an end.

Now, while some Asda charging points remain, sadly, they are not actively planning to fund the 1,300,000 battery electric cars.

Is Asda electric car charging free?

Free chargers are like gold dust, far and few between, and so they are rare by any means in 2024.

That said, it’s true – Asda does offer free EV charging, but only at a select few stores. Although, given the lack of charging infrastructure on a whole, it’s unlikely you’ll find a free Asda charger without some hardship. Still, keep your electric car ready and your eyes peeled in case you spot one.
