What is the EV chargepoint grant for landlords?

As part of the push to ensure sufficient electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the UK, OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) introduced the EV chargepoint grant for landlords in 2022. Up to £350 off the installation of one electric car charger per EV chargepoint grant is included,  or up to 75% of the total cost.

How much grant funding is available for landlords wanting to invest in EV chargers?

Thousands of pounds worth of funding is available with the EV chargepoint grant for landlords. In fact, a landlord can claim up to 200 grants per financial year at £350 per grant for residential properties, which works out to a substantial £70,000 of government funding.

Alternatively, commercial landlords can claim up to 100 grants a year, which despite being less than the residential, still equates to a maximum of £37,000 worth of funding per year for installing electric car chargers.

The EV charger grants can be used on one single rental property or spread across multiple properties as long as it does not exceed the maximum caps for the year. It can be used for either single-unit residential properties (houses/flats) or multi-unit residential properties such as apartment blocks, as long as the property is not the landlord’s place of residence.

Who is considered a landlord with the landlord EV charger grant?

In this instance, to be able to claim the £350 grants available, a landlord is classed as:

• Someone who owns or lets a property
• Management companies (RTM)
• Companies owning the freehold of a leased or rented property
• Property factor listed on the property factor register
• Private social housing providers
• Public authorities (for example, the NHS and government departments)
• Charities

Important – if you are not registered with either Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC, you will not be eligible for the grant.

How do I know if I am eligible for the EV chargepoint grant for landlords?

To be eligible for the landlord grant, you must:

• Be a landlord registered with companies house or are VAT registered.
• Have private parking and own these dedicated parking spaces. If you rent the parking, you will not be eligible.
• Have an OZEV-approved installer to complete the installations (We Power Your Car, for example).
• Have an OZEV-approved electric vehicle charger(s) installed on your property. For residential properties, you must have a charger on the eligible approved residential chargepoint model list. Alternatively, if it’s for commercial use, the authorised model lists.

Important things to note:

• You do not need to have an eligible vehicle to claim the grant, unlike the EV chargepoint grant for flat owner-occupiers and flat residents’ grant scheme.
• The landlord grant does NOT cover holiday rentals.
• If cables or other materials cross over other properties or public property, you must get the relevant permissions.
• If you are applying for a single-unit residential property, it must not be your permanent place of residence. If it is, you will not be eligible for the grant.
• If you want the grant for a commercially let property, the electric vehicle charger must only be used by staff, fleets and/or tenants – it can not be used for public use.
