Shell Recharge Charging Stations: A User's Guide

Shell Recharge Public Charging Network: A How-to Use Guide

Shell Recharge is a public charging network branched off from – you guessed it – the oil company Shell. Why? In an effort to keep up with the growing EV adoption levels, Shell is expanding to provide alternative energy sources.

Spanning across the UK and Europe, Shell Recharge locations are far and wide, offering subscription-free, rapid charging stations to make charging your electric car easy and quick. In the UK, 750+ Shell charging stations are at your disposal. For fast charging, they are made up of different rapid charging speeds – from 50kW to 175kW.

Even better, you’re charging with electricity generated entirely from 100% renewable energy. Driving us all toward a greener, cleaner future.

Now, after our brief introduction, we dive further into the Shell Recharge public charging network costs, locations, and benefits.

How much does it cost to charge my car at Shell public charging point?

All in all, Shell Recharge costs range from 69p to 89p. Specifically, the price will depend on the speed of the EV charger you are using. To date, these are the Shell charging prices:

Shell Recharge Charging Speed

Shell Recharge price per kWh

Rapid and Ultra Rapid EV chargers (between 50 to 300kW) 69p – 89p
Fast EV chargers (7kW to 22kW) 79p

On a whole, according to Zap-Map, Shell Recharge is ranked 7th in the top rapid and ultra-rapid public network prices. Keep this in mind if you want to look elsewhere for the cheapest public charging network.

How do I charge my electric car at a Shell Recharge charging station?

Here is how to charge your electric car at a Shell Recharge charging station:

  • Find a Shell Recharge charging station near you.
  • Park in the correct parking bay.
  • Start your charging session via the app, your RFID card, or your contactless card.
  • Plug the charging cable into your car (make sure it’s the correct cable. CHAdeMO, AC Type 2 and CCS connectors are available).
  • Your Shell Recharge charging session will commence.
  • Once finished, unplug the charging cable and neatly put it back on the charger.

What chargers are available?

Rapid and ultra-rapid EV charging stations, from 50kW to 175kW, are available from Shell. Unfortunately, if you’re not as a fan of the speediest charging, fast EV chargers at 7kW or 22kW aren’t available. However, these are the typical rates of home EV chargers. So, if you’re ready for cheaper, more convenient charging, investing in a home charger could be for you.

Additionally, Shell Recharge has an EV charging hub, too – similar to GRIDSERVE. Although not on the same grand scale. With partnerships with Waitrose and Costa, you can recharge your beans while you recharge your electric vehicle. Relax, take a break, or pick up a snack.

What do the charging stations look like?

Big, partly blue, and bulky. Typically, they have a large screen on the front. The body is often white with elements of the brand’s blue and sometimes yellow. A white charger icon will also be present, and will be joined by the Shell EV charging logo, too.

Where are the Shell Recharge charging stations? How do I find Shell Recharge near me?

How do you pay for Shell Recharge charging points?

Paying for EV charging with Shell Recharge is simple. With no need for a subscription, you can pay as you go in a number of different forms for maximised convenience.

Here are the ways to pay for Shell Recharge charging points:

Is it free to get a Shell Recharge card?

Excitingly, yes, Shell Recharge cards (sometimes referred to as RFID cards) are free to get. Unlike other public charging networks, which charge a fee to get a handy RFID card, Shell Recharge brings easier public charging to you.

Unfortunately, while free, Shell Recharge aren’t able to fulfil orders for new RFID cards currently. Hopefully, this should change as we progress into the new year.

Is Shell Recharge worth it?

To sum up, Shell Recharge is a great public charging network, perfect for those who need to charge their EVs quickly and conveniently on the go. In fact, with some of Shell Recharge’s charging stations reaching heights of 175kW, you can charge your electric car to 80% in as little as 20 minutes. But it doesn’t stop there.

Another benefit is that Shell Recharge doesn’t just provide speedy charging stations in the UK. If you’re cruising in your electric car abroad, you can conveniently top up your car across Europe at a Shell Recharge stop as the network is spread far and wide across seas.

Plus, with the app, you easily charge at other public charging networks, such as IONITY.
