Are Lidl chargers free?

Unfortunately not. Sadly, if you’re searching for Lidl free EV charging, you’ve missed your chance.

Back in 2017, when Lidl and Pod Point launched their collaboration, they did offer free charging on their 53kW rapid EV chargers for a time. Now, though, this has unfortunately come to a close. And, Lidl free electric car charging is no longer available.

If you’re still on the hunt for free EV charging at UK supermarkets or in general, feel free to explore free EV charging options.

Just with many supermarket EV charging facilities, such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, and Asda, you’re going to be subject to a fee.

How much does Lidl EV charging cost?

Lidl electric car charging costs vary depending on which EV charger you use and how you pay for the charging. As a matter of fact, it’s cheaper to pay through the Lidl Plus App than to pay for your Lidl EV charging sessions through third-party websites.

Since free Lidl chargers have been revoked, below are the Lidl EV charging prices to date:

Type of EV charger at Lidl Cost with Lidl Plus App Cost through a third-party website (i.e. PodPoint)
Fast EV chargers (7kW and 22kW) £0.40/kWh £0.55/kWh
Rapid EV chargers (50kW+) £0.62/kWh £0.74/kWh

Please be aware that Lidl will take a pre-authorisation fee to see if you have enough funds to pay for the charging session. This varies depending on if you use a third-party website or the Lidl Plus App. When paying through the website, there is a £80 pre-authorisation fee. It can take up to four weeks for the funds to be released. Alternatively, if you opt for the Lidl app, the pre-authorisation fee is much more palatable, at £40, and will be released within 48 hours.
