Can I get an electric car charger at home?
To install a car charger at home, you need:
- Designated off-street parking (such as a garage or driveway)
- To own the property or obtain permission from your landlord if you rent
- A stable Wi-Fi or 4G connection for smart functionality to work
- Installation to be undertaken by an OZEV authorised installer, such as We Power Your Car
Why invest in a home electric car charger?
Reduce charging costs
Installing a home car charger means you won’t have to pay a premium to use public chargers. Supercharge your savings further with smart features like charge scheduling, solar compatibility and energy tariff integration.
Faster charging at home
A 7kW home charger is 300% faster at charging an electric car battery than using a three-pin plug charger, shortening the time it takes to charge your battery threefold.
Maximum convenience
Avoid long waits at busy public chargers or the extremely slow charging time of a three-pin plug charger. A smart home charger offers maximum convenience. Just plug in and relax.
Increase your property value
Investing in a home electric car charger can boost the value of your property and appeal to homeowners who have already switched to electric.
The safest home electric car charging sessions
Protect your electric car, home, and family with a professionally installed and compliant home car charger. Invest in safe, robust, and weatherproof technology built to last.
£500 GOVERNMENT GRANTS FOR SOME HOUSEHOLDS
Some households can receive a £500 OZEV grant. These include:
- Residents in flats, apartments, or rented properties
- Residents whose business is registered at their home address, verified by a VAT or incorporation certificate.
- Residents with viable on-street parking that also have a cross-pavement charging solution installed.

What happens after I buy a charger from We Power Your Car?
Once your order is confirmed we send you a receipt and an SMS will arrive to the mobile phone number you provided so you can take some pictures and supply a few more details about your installation. Once we have this information we will contact your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for approval and if approved the team will be in touch to organise an installation date with you.
How soon can you install a home electric car charger?
We aim to install your car charger in around 4 weeks from Distribution Network Operator (DNO) approval. However, it is often sooner than this.
See below to learn more about the Distribution Network Operator (DNO).
What is the DNO?
A Distribution Network Operator (DNO) manages the electricity distribution from the national grid to homes and businesses.
DNO approval is a requirement for every electric car charger installation in the UK to ensure your local network can handle the demand for a home charger. Gaining approval typically takes a few weeks. Potential delays can also occur if additional work is needed on your property before we can install your charger. For example, if you need a fuse upgrade or your supply needs unlooping.
We have no control over the DNO approval process or how long additional work can take, and unfortunately, we cannot influence DNO-related delays. We can only offer an installation date once we have received the go-ahead from the DNO.
Please be aware that while most DNO work won’t incur any charges, in some cases, you may be responsible for any DNO costs.
What government grants are available for home chargers in 2026?
Electric vehicle chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking
You can get £500 if you own or rent a home with viable on-street parking. The council must confirm the parking. You must also install a cross-pavement charging solution before getting a home car charger.
Permission is required from your local council to qualify for the grant.
Closing date – 31st March 2027
Electric vehicle chargepoint grant for renters and flat owners
UK residents living in flats, apartments, or rented properties can receive a £500 OZEV grant for a home electric car charger installation.
If you are renting you will require your landlords permission.
Closing date – 31st March 2027
Workplace Charging Scheme
The Workplace Charging Scheme offers up to £500 per socket. While typically aimed at commercial businesses, if your business is officially registered at your home, as shown by your VAT or incorporation certificate, you can also claim £500.
Closing date – 31st March 2027
Eligibility differs for each grant scheme, but installations must always be undertaken by an OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) approved installer, such as We Power Your Car. Please contact one of our advisors at [email protected] or call us 03333 44 96 99 Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. A member of our team will walk you through the process of ordering and claiming the grant.
Why do I need a 7kW home charger?
A home 7kW charger is quicker, safer, cheaper, more convenient, and easier to use than other charging options.
Why should I trust you?
We are certified by the following bodies: Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), TrustMark and NICEIC, and hold coveted accreditations in:
- Alcumus SafeContractor
- ISO 9001
- ISO 14001
- ISO 45001
All our engineers are fully trained, vetted, certified and DBS-checked. We are also rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot, with over 800 happy customers.
What's the difference between a tethered and untethered charger?
A tethered charger has the charging cable permanently attached to the charging unit.
With an untethered/socketed charger, you must use your own charging cable and connect and disconnect the charging cable whenever you want to charge.
One type of charger is not better than the other. It’s a personal choice on which you choose. Untethered chargers offer the most flexibility, while tethered chargers offer ultimate convenience.
How long does it take to install an electric car charger?
A standard car charger installation takes between 2 to 3 hours on average.
Are there any finance options available for home charger purchases?
Finance is available on any home electric car charger and installation over £1000, so you can purchase one upfront or spread the cost over time. Subject to approval.
Can I install my own car charger?
Only qualified, experienced professional engineers should install home electric car chargers. Professional installation ensures compliance with rules and regulations. It also preserves the charger’s warranty and promises a safe and efficient installation.
Using a certified installer from the OZEV-approved list, such as We Power Your Car, is recommended for quality and safety assurance.
When should you buy a home charger?
To avoid disappointment, order your electric car charger as soon as you order an electric car. Or, order once your vehicle has arrived. This is due to rising demand for home chargers and fluctuations in DNO timelines.
