What is an untethered EV charger?
An untethered EV charger, or sometimes referred to as socketed, is an electric car charger that does not have the cable attached. You use your own charging cable, plugging and unplugging from the unit each time you need to charge.
Overall, untethered electric car chargers are typically cheaper than tethered chargers, since you use your own charging cable. Although not by much.
What are the benefits of untethered EV chargers?
- Cleaner aesthetic: While subjective, EV drivers often find untethered charging points to look more aesthetically pleasing, as the cable can be unplugged and stored elsewhere for a sleeker style.
- Futureproof: If you upgrade to a newer EV, you don’t have to replace the charger, just the charging cable if it is a different connector type.
- Flexibility: If you are a multi-EV household, even with different connector types, you can swap the charging cable and still take advantage of cheaper, greener home EV charging.
- Low replacement cost: Problem with the cable? Simply replace it, unlike tethered chargers, where the entire unit will need to be changed.

Untethered EV Charger FAQs
Do untethered EV chargers come with a charging cable?
No, untethered EV chargers never come with a charging cable – not pre-plugged in or on the side.
You use your own EV charging cable with socketed chargers. Make sure you have one to hand that matches the charger if you opt for an untethered charger.
Are untethered EV chargers cheaper?
Yes, untethered electric vehicle chargers are slightly cheaper than tethered chargers. Roughly by £50-£100, depending on the model.
Are untethered EV chargers better than tethered?
In short, no – one is not better than the other. The best choice depends on your home EV charging requirements and set-up.
Some prefer the cleaner aesthetic of the untethered electric car charger, while others prefer the convenience of the tethered.
Are untethered chargers Type 1 or Type 2?
Unlike tethered chargers, untethered chargers usually come with a Type 2 connector, but, while rare, can come with a Type 1 socket.
Additionally, if you do own a Type 1 EV and have a Type 2 charger, you can purchase a Type 2 to Type 1 cable.
How much do untethered EV chargers cost?
Electric car chargers differ in price, much like phones, in terms of specs.
That said, untethered EV chargers roughly cost between £700 and £1,200 for the charger and installation.
