The only difference is that it will be available on your smartphone on an app, instead of just via a physical card.

Why are digital driving licences being introduced?

Digital driving licenses are part of the UK government’s new, widespread initiative: the digital wallet. How do I get a digital driving licence in the UK?

Digital driving licences are said to work like mobile banking apps. But to get one, you need to:

4. Verify your identity
5. Add a driving license by adding your details

When will the digital driving licence come in?

Originally piloted in 2025, the trials have been deemed a success, with official national rollout starting now (February 2026).

Will a digital driving licence be compulsory? Will card driving licences still work?

No, digital driving licences will not be compulsory. For now, up until roughly 2030, plastic driving licences will still be issued and accepted, allowing people to get to grips with the technology.

Yes, you can have both at the same time.

Are digital driving licences safe?

Unlike plastic driving licences, which can be stolen or lost easily, digital driving licences will come with a set of strong security features:
