UK Digital Driving Licence App Launch (2026): Plastic is Out
Close your wallets and unlock your phone: the UK government is introducing digital driving licences. Set to arrive this year (2026).
Today, we cover the ins and outs of the new digital driving licence age, in addition to answering all your FAQs, including what will happen to physical, plastic driving licenses, and what the future holds.
UK Digital Driving Licence App Launch Summary:
- UK drivers will be able to access an all-new digital driving license through the GOV.UK Wallet and App in March 2026, with the rollout set to finish by the end of 2027.
- These changes are part of a technological re-structuring, with government services changing on the whole. Digital documentation will soon become the norm with GOV/UK’s digital wallet, where physical documents will be replaced with digital alternatives.
- Physical driving licences will still stay in circulation, with digital licenses being entirely optional.
- Digital IDs, such as a digital licence and digital veteran cards, are set to be the first digitalised IDs.
- Digital versions are set to be safer and more secure than physical versions. Plus, it will offer more convenience with instant identity verification.
What is a digital driving licence?
A digital driving licence is exactly like a traditional plastic card licence, including all the same details:
- Photograph
- Full name
- Card number
- Date and place of birth
- Issue date
- Expiry date
- Issue date
- Driver number
- Signature
- Address
The only difference is that it will be available on your smartphone on an app, instead of just via a physical card.
Which smartphones will be compatible with the digital driving licence?
- iOS: iPhone
- Android: Google Pixel, Samsung, Sony
Where will the digital driving licence be available on your phone?
Only in one place: the GOV.UK One app.
Is it only full driving licences that will be available digitally?
No, both full and provisional driving licences will be able to be accessed digitally.
Why are digital driving licences being introduced?
Digital driving licenses are part of the UK government’s new, widespread initiative: the digital wallet. The digital reforms are aimed at modernising paperwork and simplifying processes, enabling instant verification to remove barriers to transactions and admin: hiring cars, renewing a driver’s license, and proving identity when purchasing age-restricted items. Old IDs will be swapped for digital identity and digital credentials.
Technology is rampant in the UK, and so the government is set to match consumer behaviour, while also saving up to £45 billion.
Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander said:
This is a game changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID.
How do I get a digital driving licence in the UK?
Digital driving licences are said to work like mobile banking apps. But to get one, you need to:
- Check your phone is compatible with the GOV.UK app
- Download the GOV.UK Wallet App on your smartphone
- Sign in or create an account
- Verify your identity
- Add a driving license by adding your details
- Swipe up your phone when needed
What are the pros of digital driving licences?
- Instant renewal and access to private data instead of having to wait for the post
- Convenience: Provide identity more easily and quickly.
- Real-time updates
Science Secretary Peter Kyle said:
When will the digital driving licence come in?
Originally piloted in 2025, the trials have been deemed a success, with official national rollout starting now (February 2026).
Will a digital driving licence be compulsory? Will card driving licences still work?
No, digital driving licences will not be compulsory. For now, up until roughly 2030, plastic driving licences will still be issued and accepted, allowing people to get to grips with the technology.
So, you choose which method you prefer.
Can I have both a digital driving licence and a physical card licence?
Yes, you can have both at the same time.
Are digital driving licences safe?
Unlike plastic driving licences, which can be stolen or lost easily, digital driving licences will come with a set of strong security features:
- Biometric authentication
- AES-256 encryption
- Multi-factor authentication (password, facial recognition, fingerprint)
- Lost protocol: You can instantly revoke your license if your phone is lost. Stopping others from accessing
These security features are the same used in banks.
Final thoughts
The introduction of digital ID, including digital licences, offers a new level of convenience for UK drivers that has never been seen before. However, how many drivers will actually opt in to this new digital world? Only time will tell.
