Easee One EV Charger Review: Is It the Easy Choice?

Easee One EV Charger Review: is it the easy choice?

Next in our home EV charger review series is the Easee One. All the way from across the globe, the Scandinavian electric car charger is sparking heat in the home EV charging market.

But is it really the easy choice when choosing an EV home charger?

Today, we’ll cover the Easee One EV charger, including the benefits, downsides, and the final verdict.

Who is Easee?

In a few words, Easee is a Scandinavian green tech company founded in 2018. With a primary focus on innovation and sustainability, Easee is committed to creating smart, simple, and stylish chargers that optimise energy efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

Easee One: An Overview

Simply put, the Easee One is a 7.4kW fast home EV charger for single-phase power supplies, adding around 25-30 miles per hour. If you are after a 22kW charging point, there is an Easee version – the Easee Charge. However, we’re focusing on just the one today.

The One is an untethered EV charger – sometimes referred to as socketed. And while they say one size doesn’t fit all, the Easee technically does. As a socketed charger, the Easee is universal. So, all battery electric cars and plug-in hybrids are compatible so long as you have the correct cable.

On top of this, the Easee One is a hat-trick award winner: Auto Trader Best Home Charger 2024, What Car? Best Home EV Chargers 2024, and Auto Express Best Home Wallbox Chargers.

After this short run down, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of the Easee One EV charger review.

Easee Design

Of course, aesthetic taste is subjective. Everyone knows this. But in our opinion, the Easee One is arguably the most aesthetically pleasing EV charger on the UK market. Perhaps even the global market.

Its sharp, clean angles are reminiscent of typical minimalistic Scandinavian design. Yet, the Easee One is decadent in design, adding a luxurious twist with its matte cover and geometric nature.

And it doesn’t stop there.

With five interchangeable front covers, you can keep your Easee One fresh with its neutral palette colours: black, white or anthracite grey. Or vamp it up with a shocking statement red or a subtle moonlight dark blue.

Redecorating? Change the front cover to match. Buying a new EV? Change the front cover. Bored with the colour? You guessed it – change the front cover.

Upgrade your Easee home charging set-up and create a well-branded eco-system, too. Invest in an Easee U-Hook in a matching colour to your charging point or a glamorous mirror finish) or sturdy, strong, branded charging cable.

To finish, style isn’t the only benefit of the One; the build quality is also immaculate.

Easee Safety and Reliability

Let’s address the elephant in the room. You may or may not have heard what happened with the Easee One and the Swedish incident—the one where the Easee One was banned from being sold in Sweden.

We’re here to put your mind at ease (no pun intended).

Nothing was physically wrong with the Easee One – not now or ever. In fact, it was simply an issue with a lack of correct technical documentation—an admin error rather than one of concern. Actually, the Easee One was still allowed to be sold during this time in the UK, as there was nothing unsafe with the charger, and it complied with all UK regulations.

Now, this paperwork mishap is fixed, and the Easee One has all the correct documentation.

Let’s get into just how safe the Easee One is.

  1. Weatherproof: All EV charging points are suitable for charging electric cars in the rain. But the Easee goes the extra mile. Considering the Easee charger can face the tough Nordic climate, you are more than good to go in the UK. Rated IP54, with 11 sensors and intelligent temperature measures, you’re in safe hands. If there is ever an unexpected lift in temperature, the unit will shut down. So winter, spring, summer, and autumn – you’re all set.
  1. Automatic self-testing: The integrated RCD self-tests every charging session. If there is a problem, you’ll know. A red light will flash on your charging point, and you won’t be able to charge. Safety first.
  2. Open PEN conductor protector: Your installation is quicker and cheaper with OPEN pen protection as you don’t need an earth rod. But more importantly, it protects you from abnormal supply voltage, which can lead to electrical shocks.

Easee EV Charger App

All home EV chargers are managed by a smartphone app, available on Google and the Apple store. But what can you do with the Easee App?

Here are your options:

  • Monitor and manage your charging (and power consumption)
  • Start and stop charging at the touch of a button
  • Check charging status
  • Adjust home charger power (1.4-7.4kW)
  • Schedule charging sessions
  • Analyse data history, including how much you’ve spent on home-charging
  • Lock your charging cable (only with the Easee branded cable)
  • Access control (including RFID tag, if you have purchased this extra)

Plus, while a novelty feature, you can change the colour of the Easee on your app to match your in-person Easee. Ultimate synergy guaranteed.

What’s more, you can connect your Easee One to your app through Wi-Fi or with the built-in eSIM. Good for anyone, especially those with connection issues.

Functionality-wise, much like the Apple-esk style, the Easee app is clean and easy to use.

Does the Easee One work with solar?

Technically, yes, the Easee One works with solar panels with the correct solar charging set-up. But you have to buy the Easee Equalizer and have it installed for it actually to work. Sadly, on its own, the Easee One doesn’t work with solar.

What are the pros and cons of the Easee One Charger?

Nothing is perfect for everyone, and home chargers are no different. Let’s explore the pros and cons of the Easee One in this review. Please keep in mind that some of these are subjective.

Pros of the Easee One:

1. Flexibility

Stuck on the big tethered or untethered debate? You don’t have to choose.

Despite the Easee’s untethered form, you can lock your charging cable in place. So, you can imitate the look and feel of a tethered charger at the click of a button.

That’s on top of the universal charging that works with Type 1 and Type 2 electric car charging points, offering a flexible future.

Another bonus is the interchangeable front cover.

2. Connection options

Typically, a home EV charger can either connect to a smartphone app through Wi-Fi or a mobile connection – not both. Yet the Easee One goes further than the norm with a free-for-life eSIM for mobile connectivity or you can request a Wi-Fi connection if it’s stronger where you live. Stable and dependable for uninterrupted charging sessions.

3. Unrivalled design

The Easee One’s look is unique and undeniably sleek. It’s hard to turn your nose up at such a futuristic and beautifully modern-designed electric car charger.

Similarly, the unit is small in stature and weighs only 1.5kg. So, even with its clean design, it will never be a large eyesore disrupting your home’s exterior.

4. Security features

Not only does the cable lock offer flexible charging for tethered/untethered charging, but it also provides a layer of theft protection, blocking people from stealing your charging cable.

5. Automatic over-the-air-updates

Never worry about your tech being outdated. Easee’s smart technology automatically updates your firmware, saving you precious time.

6. Safety features

As we discussed earlier, safety is no concern. Smart, safe, and compliant with all regulations, the Easee promises an abundance of safety features and built-in technology to shield you.

7. Ease of use

Clear, simple and practical – the app and the charger app are uncomplicated and user-friendly for quick charging straight out of the box.

Cons of the Easee One:

1. No smart tariff compatibility

You can save hundreds of pounds with the Easee One by charging overnight during off-peak hours. But we’re truly sorry to say that it lacks full tariff compatibility.

What does this mean? Well, in lamens terms, it means it can’t connect your charger with special EV tariffs from energy providers that maximise savings.

So, if you want to charge for 7p with the British Gas EV Tariff, or if you want to save, save, save with the Intelligent Octopus Go Tariff, you won’t be able to.

If this is a game changer for you, perhaps think about investing in an Ohme (Ohme ePod or Ohme Home Pro).

2. Solar charging is an extra

Certain chargers, such as the VCHRGD Seven or evec, come with solar compatibility built in from the get-go – and at a cheaper price.

The Easee gains a few points for solar compatibility but then loses them for the additional cost.

3. Load balancing is an extra

Again, another smart feature is an added extra cost. Load balancing isn’t essential, but it might come in handy for you. Simply put, load balancing makes sure your electricity is equally distributed across your charger and your household appliances to prevent overloading your circuit.

Is an Easee charger worth it? Is it the One for you?

Absolutely – the Easee One charger is worth every penny. In fact, we’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best electric car chargers for EV owners. One for all and all for one – the Easee One is a great choice for everyone. Whether you are an EV notice or a newbie, the Easee One EV charger is easy to use, . The charging point is exceptional now, and it will only continue to be so way into the future as it outlasts other electric car chargers on the market.

From the ease of use of its app to the inclusion of PEN fault protection for easier, quicker installation, Easee truly earns its namesake. Simplicity at its finest.

Even better, designers created the Easee One with style in mind. In our opinion, it exceeds the look of other chargers on the market at a similar price point. Wouldn’t you agree?

The only caveat is that the One is missing a few non-essential smart features as standard and lacks full tariff compatibility. But, with new technology updates coming out, who knows if this is something the Easee will be able to do in the future? Even the woes of the Easee aren’t truly something to snub.
