Summary:
- The best electric family car is the Volkswagen ID. Buzz – it’s also the best family electric car 7-seater.
- The top 6 best family EVs in 2025/2026 are:
- Volkswagen ID.Buzz
- MG4
- Hyundai Ioniq 5
- Kia EV9
- Citroen e-C3
- Polestar 3
1. Volkswagen ID.Buzz (seven seater edition)
One of the biggest and certainly, in our opinion, the best, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz seven seater tops the list of the best family electric cars—by a mile.
In a nostalgic, retro tribute to the 60s vibe, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a fun, fresh and family favourite; not only for the vast space, but for its entire aesthetic. With a whacky camper van soul and a pop of colour, it’s fun to look at, and fun to drive. So much so, we’d bet even your kids won’t be embarrassed at drop-off.
What’s more, the ID. Buzz is for the larger-than-life family, comfortably seating up to 6-7 people with foldable rear seats to shrink your family’s size.
Now, you may be thinking, it must be a tight fit. You’re wrong.
This electric SUV’s boot size is in its league of its own; at a whopping 1,100 litres, the gargantuan boot is one of the largest in the EV space. And that’s not mentioning the full scale of the Buzz’s luggage capacity: up to 2,496 litres.
And while, to some, a novelty, the Buzz’s sliding doors allow for a fast and smooth loading and unloading of your precious cargo.
We also can’t forget to mention the Buzz’s unique panoramic sunroom feature, with light and protection in the smart glass, creating a fresh, light feel inside the cabin and adding to the overall spacious driving experience.
All in all, we can see what all the buzz is about.
Of course, nothing is perfect. While we crown the Volkswagen ID. Buzz the best family electric car, specifically for its size, the starting price of £60,000 is similar to that of more premium, luxury electric vehicles from £65,000.
But, it’s not all bad news: it’s now eligible for the freshly released Electric Car Grant. The new edition comes with an increased 293-mile range, too.
2. MG4
Our best family electric car runner-up. At a level-headed £27,245 entry price, the MG4 offers a lot of bang for your buck.
While not as roomy as the Volkswagen, the MG4 is perfect for a family of four; spacious enough to get everybody in without sitting on each other’s laps. Practical for everyday life for seating and storage, too. The 289L boot provides enough space for your essentials: shopping bags, school bags, and even room for a folded-up tent and coolers for a weekend away.
And available in a vast array of colours: Arctic White, Holborn Blue, Black Pearl, Camden Grey, Volcano Orange and Dynamic red: let your little one pick the colour scheme…if you dare.
The claimed range is 329 miles, which is extensive for an electric car, but especially for affordability. Enough that you can easily do the school run, your daily commute and stop off at the supermarket and be on time for tea.
If you’re not in the market for a seven-seater family electric car, the MG4 could be one to seriously consider.
3. Hyundai Ioniq 5
Squish-free driving with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Its generous boot space at 520 litres safely swallows prams, shopping bags, scooters and weekend gear with ease. And the three-meter interior length – front to back – creates a clean, open living space for everyone, allowing everyone to breathe, stretch and sprawl. No arguments here.
With strong storage, the cabin space is also perfect for a family of four. One seasoned Hyundai Ioniq driver has said they are a family of four and a Labrador, highlighting the roomy feel of the car.
Inside, kids of all ages are catered for with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Child or teenager, the Ioniq 5 is kitted out with built-in USB ports, cup holders for every drink, and hidden storage cubbies to stash toys, snacks or top-secret treasure.
No need to keep your children entertained, either. They won’t be singing the dreaded chorus of, ‘Are we there yet?’ Enthralled and busy with the two 12.3-inch screens, the infotainment system will keep the bright young mind occupied, no matter the journey.
The price is higher at £39,995, but the style, space and functionality make the Hyundai Ioniq 5 one of the greats.
4. Kia EV9
A plush three-row, seven-seater SUV, whatever size your family is, you’ll fit, with room to spare, whether you’re a growing family or counting your children on two hands. You’re not in for a squeeze. Stretch your legs, take a deep breath, and get ready for a comfortable ride in this family SUV.
Exterior-wise, the Kia EV9 offers a futuristic aesthetic, while simultaneously providing in a strong, safe brick-like build.
And with a 349-mile range, it isn’t something to turn your nose up at, either. Go the long distance, whether it’s the school run or a family holiday, trust that the Kia will get you there.
Due to the price and premium style, the starting price is from £65,000.
5. Citroen e-C3
If you’re a family that favours towering skyscrapers and the cosmopolitan lifestyle over a quiet village nestled out in the sticks, then the Citroen e-C3 is the best EV for your family.
With ample space to manoeuvre in the cabin and a well-rounded real-world range of 200 miles, you can easily zip about the city in this small, stylish SUV before needing to top up.
Features support your fast family life, too, with a handy one-litre bottle storage in all four door pockets, perfect for your children’s juice cartons and Stanley cups, and a 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen to occupy the kids when you’ve pulled up to charge.
At a disgustingly reasonable price of £20,095, the Citroen e-C3 is the ideal electric vehicle for families with busy, fast-paced schedules, mainly in the vicinity of your home city. Tip: avoid if you are one to take long commutes or an explorer who loves to roam cross-country.
6. Polestar 3
Spacious, slim, and stylish. The Polestar combines a luxurious, coupe-like style with vast interior space to provide one of the best luxury-esque family electric cars.
Despite the slight, sloping build, the Polestar 3 can comfortably fit five adults, with generous legroom a bonus to those stuck in the backseat, perfect for growing children.
But it’s managed to sneak a spot in our best family electric car list, not for its arguably capacious, upmarket design, but for its solidified safety.
In fact, the Polestar is the safest car for children, with 93% for child occupant protection. And comes with its unique child mode and animal mode for maximised peace of mind.
Now onto storage – or specifically, the secret storage space. Lift the floor, and you’ll find an underfloor storage compartment. Circle back to the front, and discover a unique ‘fronk’ (front trunk). Luggage is never an eyesore with these nifty compartments.
Powerful yet pricey, the Polestar’s price tag is heavy at £69,990. The long range of 350 miles helps digest the price.
Considering everything, the Polestar 3 is an all-rounder for families wanting to lower their carbon footprint without compromising style, space, or a battery pack designed for long journeys.
