Contemporary Hotel - hotel case study

Introduction

The accommodation and hotel industry are a fiercely competitive segment. Guest expectations are changing so failure to adopt new technologies can leave businesses at a disadvantage.
But as with all challenges, they also present opportunities, as demonstrated by a recent install we undertook at a contemporary hotel in London.

EV charging at hotels

As part of the successful reinvention of a former office building, the company behind the project recognised that a growing number of guests, who wished to stay at a modern hotel situated in easy distance of central London, were also likely to be electric vehicle owners.

“Our goal with the project was to deliver the highest standards of design and modernity. It was clear to the team that electric vehicles are the future, and our potential guests would expect facilities that matched the rest of the experience we have created.”

Although installation and maintenance are an additional cost the correct solution can be revenue generating both in terms of guest payment for charging, and in being the deciding factor in a guest choosing a hotel over a rival.

The challenge was matching a contemporary design led hotel with a contemporary design led EV charging experience

Charging in hospitality settings such as hotels is often a frustrating experience for guests with charging facilities tucked away in corners of the car park as an afterthought, and the need to rely on apps and QR codes for payment.

In addition to addressing the less-than-optimal common experience, the proposal had to align with the vision for the property, so it was important that not only did the charging hardware and physical bay design meet the exacting standards of the team, but the whole charging experience must be as easy to use and delightful as possible for guests. A superior experience could be the key to turning a one-time guest into a repeat visitor.

There were other practical considerations to be taken into account, the installation would need to ensure minimum disruption to other guests, and the daily life of the hotel whilst the work was completed.

How We Power Your Car Responded

After receiving the initial brief and over the course of discovery meetings about the project, we shaped our proposal around elevating the guest experience. The final project including the civils was to deliver the following infrastructure and solution over the course of a 3 day programme.

Project overview

6 highly visible EV charging bays with crash barriers and clear signage
6 x Easee charge 22kW chargers mounted on pillars
1 x Bright.Green touchscreen payment kiosk located in the hotel reception

“We understood the high attention to detail the team were pouring into renovating and launching the Hotel, so we knew the EV charging infrastructure had to be an extension of this.”

Stevie Jones
Head of Commercial Sales

A key component of the proposal was the use of a touchscreen payment kiosk from UK vending pioneers Bright.Green. The sleek unit was mounted in the stylish reception area of the hotel, its large touchscreen allowing graphics and instructions to attract and guide the user for an optimal charging and payment experience.

“We were excited to be involved with this project because it is another demonstration of the benefits of our hardware and the superior customer experience using our platform provides to businesses.”

Dan Barnes
COO, Bright.Green

In addition to the option to pay via the kiosk in reception, a standard QR code payment solution was also offered at the chargers themselves, once again provided by Bright.Green.

The results

The install was completed over 3 days in October, with the installation team staying in the hotel while they completed the work.
Hotel manager commented that “the team were lovely; they kept the disruption to our guests to a bare minimum which was of the upmost importance thing to us.” The finished installation and kiosk has already been a hit with EV driving guests “We’ve had lots of guests complimenting us on how easy charging is”.

The suggestion of using the Bright.Green kiosk in addition to the contemporary Scandinavian design aesthetic of the Easee chargers really elevated the project plan from We Power Your Car, I felt they understood what my team and I were trying to achieve with the project.

Talks have already begun about adding a similar EV charging installation at the groups next project.

If you’re looking for a partner to consider your ethos and your customer needs beyond just placing hardware in the ground, then I would highly recommend We Power Your Car. We believe, it raises the bar on what hospitality venues in this bracket can offer.
